Dubai is a very fascinating place to be in. And if you are fortunate enough to travel to Dubai at any point of time, then there are some places that you just cannot afford to miss. Dubai Creek & Abra Cruise is highly recommended for visitors to experience the Dubai creek as it is the foundation from which Dubai grew into a port for trading vessels sailing between India, Africa and the Middle East. Today, some of the old shipping culture still remains and visitors can view some of the original buildings that have served as customs houses. The dinner cruise option is popular.
Dubai Museum is situated in Bur Dubai and is incorporated in the Al Sahidi Fort. The Fort was built in the late 18th century and was in the past a seat for the government and the rulers main residence. The restored fort now provides a fascinating insight into olden days in Dubai.
Dubai Tower is the world’s tallest building located near Sheikh Zayed Road Dubai between Dubai city and Jumeirah Beach.
Jumeirah Mosque is located on Jumeirah Road opposite Palm Strip Mall and is a dominant landmark of the Dubai landscape being built in the medieval Fatimid tradition using modern building materials. It is one of the few Mosques which are open to non-Muslims for tours. There is a Cultural Centre designed to foster understanding between religions.
Desert Safari, also known as Dune Bashing to locals, is a popular tour where visitors are taken to the desert in a 4WD and specialist desert drivers take you for a roller-coaster ride over red sand dunes. The tour may include a barbecue dinner with music and belly dancing.
Palm Islands are the three largest artificial islands in the world and are a spectacular and amazing experience.
Hot Air Ballooning is available throughout the year as the Dubai region has excellent weather for ballooning. Experience the fun & unique sensation of being in a hot air balloon flying gently high above the sand dunes and mountains early in the morning during sunrise. Visitors are picked up early from their accommodation and taken inland to the desert where the balloon flight takes off at dawn.
Wild Wadi is a water amusement park situated between Burj Al Arab and Jumeirah Beach Hotel in Dubai, it’s just a 20-minute drive from the city centre. Themed around the tale of Juha, a popular character from Arabian folklore, the waterpark boasts 30 rides and attractions.
Diving and snorkeling – There are many dive operators in Dubai running day scuba diving trips to the wreck sites or take a 90 minute road journey to the East coast Emirate of Fujairah for excellent diving on coral reefs.
Dubai Zoo is located on Jumeirah Road near the beach and hotel districts.
Golf has become popular in Dubai. There are some of the world’s most amazing golf courses with luscious green fairways and smooth greens. This truly is a golfer’s paradise. Alternatively, for a more local flavor, try sand golf!
Beautiful beaches with warm, clear water and white sand located on the Arabian Gulf invite visitors to participate in endless water-sport opportunities year round. Ocean temperatures range from 22°C in winter up to 35°C in summer.
Dubailand is the biggest and most ambitious building project in the world designed to elevate Dubai to the world’s premier tourist destination. The project includes leisure, hotel, retail, entertainment, theme parks, residential areas, and the world’s largest shopping mall. Much is still under development but when complete this will be an amazing attraction.
Visit Burj Khalifa – Burj Khalifa is not only the tallest building in the world; it is also Dubai’s deepest, widest and gaudiest. Check out the exhibit included in the building’s history and then take the world’s fastest lift. It only takes a few seconds to get to the top, so hold on to your hat. Though it is not designed for the faint-hearted, they will find it worthwhile since the views are breathtaking. If you are an avid photographer, you can bring along your tripod to capture the views over the city and across the beach. Google the site and book your tickets in advance. The best time to go is at sunset so you can be able to see Dubai by day and nighttime.
Take a trip on Dubai Creek – After seeing the tallest building in the world, you will want something more simple, like an abra ride along Dubai Creek, which is one of the oldest and most beautiful areas of Dubai. Nothing can beat the simple joy of riding an abra across Dubai Creek at sunset for only one dirham, as singing is heard among mosque minarets as a call for prayer. When you close your eyes for a moment, you can go back to the ’60s, when the city just started. You can also pay £10/hour to rent a private abra.
On the other end, you will encounter the fragrance of Dubai’s spice souk. Here is where you can buy some frankincense and incense burner. Thereafter, you can take a walk around Deira, an old yet beautiful place with unusual alleys and skinny cats. The place is full of character.
Visit The Sheikh Mohammed Centre for Cultural Understanding – This place is great for either breakfast or lunch, but comes with a twist. If you have always been curious about Islam practices but did not know whom to ask, now’s the time. For instance, if you are wondering why women use an abaya, how long can camels live in the desert, or why Muslims pray while facing a certain direction, now you can get all the answers from here and more specifically, Nasip, the charismatic host of the centre. Don’t be surprised when you leave the place with a deeper awareness of the Muslim community.
The centre, as its name connotes, is a place for understanding different cultures. It is managed by an Emirati male married to a European woman. There are people who come to have breakfast or lunch. In case you are bold enough, when you are the only one left, ask for permission to climb up the roof so you can admire the sceneries. Now, if the right timing permits you to be there while the Muslim’s prayer is sung, you will surely get goose bumps.
Things to Do in Dubai – Dubai is a modern day metropolis set right in the middle of a desert. The landscape that is there now has been developed since the early 1970’s and in recent years has taken on an even quicker pace. With reserves of oil slowly coming to an end in Dubai, they have changes their focus for bringing money into the Emirate to finance and tourism. If you take a trip to Dubai, even the financial district is worth a visit, purely for the vastness of the buildings, and to see the lifestyle that the high fliers from around the world can earn in Dubai.
There are hundreds of hotels which have all been well documented, and it is possible with a bit of planning to get a room in one of the more high end hotels for very reasonable prices. If your budget doesn’t stretch that far, then simply visit the likes of the Kemplinski or the Sheraton and sample one of their many restaurants. Cab rides are very cheap, so you can get around the city with ease. Shopping is the other draw of Dubai. There seems to be a new mall opening every week, and with the opening of the Dubai Mall – which is also the world’s largest – you can spend days just making sure you have got all the shopping your airline will allow you to bring back.
Relaxing away from the hotels is also very easy. Because Dubai is so multicultural there are hundreds of nationalities represented in small cafes that line the streets. And if you want to get away from the bright lights, simply book a desert safari and experience what Arabia would have been like before all the modern construction. Dubai is a mix of modern Western ideals and traditional Middle Eastern values. Just make sure you abide by the local laws and you will have an amazing holiday. As you can see there is a lot to do in Dubai – one visit may not be enough!
