Delphine Restaurant and Bar
Back in West Hollywood, where Delphine Restaurant & Bar originally began its story, the restaurant has reputedly become a haunt for A-list celebrities and popular for its California-inspired menu. Here in the UAE, Delphine has landed at The H Dubai.
In keeping with that expectation of Hollywood glamour, you’ll find a kind of souped-up 1920s bistro vibe, with glittery glass chandeliers set against masculine leather seating and statement flooring everywhere you look, from marble mosaics in Art Deco geometric patterns to fishbone wooden flooring with a golden polish to it. Lovely, right? Actually, yes. So, why don’t we really like the setting at Delphine? The restaurant has taken over space that used to be dedicated to a rather generic hotel lobby restaurant, and Delphine still has an entirely open frontage, exposed to the hub bub of the lobby, making it feel a little like, well, a hotel lobby restaurant.
Still, within this (almost) glamorous setting, service is pleasant and welcoming. The staff have a grip on the menu and sweet manners – though the original advice that the starters are extremely small wasn’t entirely accurate, and we could have done with one less dish than ordered under their guidance for our first course.
The menu itself is a very modern list; a small, neat selection that still manages to take a broad and very high-end Californian sweep across the world’s cooking. Some Latin notes, plenty of Italian notes, and even, in a nod to our region, a few Middle Eastern notes, with the inclusion of kibbeh nayyeh with zaatar mayonnaise, and crab and scallop kibbeh.
The ahi tuna was an elegant little slice of layered avocado and raw tuna, which tasted just as colourful and fresh as it looked, with bright lemon and sesame tones bringing it alive. The burrata arrived with a little off-key arty plating, showing off plenty of white space. A nice (but not exactly soul-shaking) burrata teamed with a simple salad of heirloom tomatoes. Again, good tomatoes, but all with a slightly tight, cold, straight from the fridge tension to them. And it lacked a little sun-drenched juicy sweetness. We also ordered the spinach and artichoke dip. In reality, this seriously cheesey concoction in a little cast iron casseroule dish was far too rich and heavy to supplement the other plates. However, in its own indulgent right, it was very enjoyable.
On to a red meat-laden choice of main courses, our lamb rack and beef short rib both came recommended by the waitress. Both were well executed and enjoyable, too. The slightly pink lamb sat atop a bed of smoky, creamy aubergine puree, along with truffle-scented potatoes. The beef rib was a colourful, pretty plate, with creamy, fatty and tender meat, crunchy little wisps of artichoke and buttery potato puree.
Overall the food at Delphine is good, but perhaps more towards the price bracket of a very glitzy, glamorous VIP spot. The venue itself though, as nice as it is, does not feel like a restaurant you would come to for a VIP-worthy evening out.
