The Dubai Mall
The Dubai Mall is the world’s largest shopping and entertainment destination with over 1,200 retail outlets, two anchor department stores, and over 160 food and beverage outlets , Dubai Mall is the ultimate destination for great shopping and entertainment. You might easily think of this mammoth mall as a city unto itself, with an Olympic-size ice rink, world’s biggest aquarium, indoor theme parks and underwater museums. There’s a strong international label presence here, alongside Galleries Lafayette department store from France, Hamley’s toy store from the UK and the first Bloomingdale’s outside the United States.
The Dubai Mall is a huge, day-lit mall with wide aisles and lots of open spaces and the floors are divided as per product categories — eg, for your high end designer labels, Fashion Ave is the place to go while the high-street fashion occupies the ground floor. Sorts wear such as Columbia, Nike, Adidas and the like are right next to the ice-rink. When you are done with shopping, enjoy a cup of coffee by the waterfall which seems even more ethereal by night. The mall even has a Gold Souk (market) at the centre dominated by the Treasury Dome.
Dubai Mall also has a 250-room luxury hotel, 22 cinema screens and over 14,000 parking spaces across 3 car parks, with valet services and a car locator ticketing system.
Did you know? In 2012, Dubai Mall continued to hold title of world’s most-visited shopping and leisure destination, and attracted more than 65 million visitors. It even attracted more visitors than New York City with over 52 million tourists in 2012, and Los Angeles with 41 million.
Dubai Mall Attractions
The Dubai Fountain
This sight has to be seen to believe it. The fountain shoots up as high as 150 m and the beam of light shining upward from the fountain can be seen from over miles away. Set on the 30- acre Burj Khalifa Lake the fountain has five circles of varying sizes and two central arcs. It comes alive every day with the performance repertoire including Sama Dubai; Baba Yetu, an award-winning song in Swahili; the Arab world’s top-selling dance number Shik Shak Shok; and the signature piece of world-renowned Italian tenor Andrea Bocelli, Con te partiro (Time to Say Goodbye).
Dubai Aquarium and Under Water Zoo
Take a tour of the Aquarium and underwater zoo and immerse yourself in a world of incredible experiences with the corals, sting rays, groupers, sharks and schools of varied fish. You can view most of these from the outside or pay a small fee to be able to walk through a tunnel and watch the giant sting rays swim above your head and go nose-to-nose with dozens of sharks. If that’s not close enough, don a wetsuit and join a dive instructor on a shark dive (Dh625 if PADI-certified, Dh825 if uncertified). Alternatively you could hop on a glass-bottomed boat for a glacial float. Upstairs, the Underwater Zoo journeys through three eco-zones: rainforest, rocky shore and ocean. There are lots of rare and interesting occupants here, enough to keep you occupied for hours.
Dubai Ice Rink
The multi-purpose ice-rink is the first Olympic sized ice rink in Dubai and can host up to 2,000 guests. You can learn to skate, figure skate or have hockey matches when the temperatures are soaring outside.
SEGA Republic is one of the most popular highlights of the mall. This huge 76,000 sq ft indoor theme park hosts one of the region’s largest selection of redemption games as well as a huge selection of winnable merchandise for all ages. It is a park that is mainly dedicated to SEGA’s icon Sonic the Hedgehog. The entrance to Sega Republic is located on the second floor of The Dubai Mall.
The Reel Cinemas, a 22 screen megaplex with more than 2,800 seats is a great place to catch up on all your favorite films after a day of shopping. Multi language films are screened here and you can enjoy both 2D and 3D experience at The Reel Cinemas.
