Laser Birthmarks Treatment

No doubt aging and other environmental damages affect the texture and appearance of skin but there are some patches or marks that appear on the skin by birth and are known as birthmarks. Some of these marks may not be harmful while others may lead to severe conditions if not treated properly. Birthmarks are basically congenital spots or marks on the skin having variations in color. Though birthmarks appear before birth, they may also appear after the child is born. Most of the children get the birthmarks that are caused by uneven or extra pigmentation of the skin, while in others birthmarks are caused by abnormalities of blood vessels.

Birthmarks vary depending on their texture, size, color and depth. There are two main types of birthmarks – pigmented birthmarks and vascular birthmarks.

Pigmented birthmarks:

Pigments are basically colors and pigmented birthmarks are the spots and marks appearing on the skin due to pigments on that part of skin. Here are some specified types of pigmented birthmarks.

Though moles may appear at later stages of life but sometimes they also appear on the skin by birth and last for lifetime. Most of the moles are harmless but some can also lead to developing skin cancer. Large number of moles or moles having large size can increase the risk of skin cancer. Their color ranges from tan to black color and their shapes and sizes also vary.

Mongolian spots:
These spots have gray-blue color, mostly occur on the lower backs or buttocks of babies and are most common in babies having darker skin. They give the appearance of flat bruises.

Vascular birthmarks:

Heart and blood vessels make up the vascular system and vessels are responsible for the flow of blood throughout the body. Vascular birthmarks appear on the skin when these vessels clump together or due to other disorders, they become prominent and start appearing on the skin. More than one in every ten babies get these marks on the skin. More specified types of such type of marks are given below.

The salmon patch birthmark:
Salmon patch is the most common birthmark and more than 50 percent of babies get these birthmarks. These marks occur due to expansion of capillaries – small blood vessels – in the form of small pink or faint red irregularly shaped patches. These marks occur on forehead, face (mostly between eyebrows and on eyelids), neck and back of head. The marks that appear on the face are given the name of angel’s kiss, those which appear at the back of the neck are called stork bite.

Port wine birthmark:
Port wine birthmarks, commonly known as Port Wine Stains are red or purple colored patches varying in size that occur in nearly 3 infants out of every 1000. They occur due to malformation of capillaries (small blood vessels) and with the passage of time they become thick and uneven. These marks appear on the face but they can also appear on other areas of body including neck and upper trunk.

Strawberry hemangioma birthmark:
These are the most common types of birthmarks that are painless and harmless. Hemangiomas occur in the form of patches on the surface of skin having various colors including tan, black, pale blue, white, pink, red or purple. The cause behind appearance of these marks is development of small blood vessels. They may not be there at the time of birth and may appear few weeks after birth. These marks can appear anywhere on the body but mostly they occur on scalp, face, chest or back.

Cavernous hemangioma birthmark:
Cavernous hemangioma birthmarks are just like strawberry hemangioma but they occur deep in the skin. They occur in the form of spongy tissues filled by blood that may shrink with the passage of time but they need treatment because their presence can lead to interference in sight, feeding or breathing.

Venous malformations:
Venous malformations may occur as birthmarks but are very rare that are protruding and bigger than other birthmarks. The cause behind these birthmarks is entangling of blood vessels and these vessels become prominent on the skin.

Treatments of birthmarks:

Though abnormal vessels and pigmentation are considered reason behind the occurrence of birthmarks but the exact cause is not known. When it comes to the treatment of birthmarks, most of them require no treatment and fade away with the passage of time but sometimes treatment becomes necessary. If you think, your child is having any of these kinds of scars, it is recommended to see an experienced dermatologist for the recommendation of proper treatment. Selection of treatment greatly depends on the prediction about the progress of birthmark. At Laser Skincare Clinic we mostly use laser treatment for birthmark removal. Laser machine used for birthmarks removal in Abu Dhabi is Q-switched NDYAG Laser.

Preparing for Laser Birthmarks removal:

•Avoid exposing treatment area to direct sunlight during the last two weeks before procedure
•Have a sound sleep the night before your birthmark removal
•Choose an appropriate, loose fitted dress that allows for birthmark visibility
•Apply the numbing cream at least 45-60 minutes before procedure
•Shower and clip or shave hair any hair at the treatment site

Laser therapy:

Laser therapy is considered the most effective and easy treatment for birthmarks removal in Sharjah. In laser treatment, beam of laser is made to penetrate the birthmark and remove it. A special type of laser treatment, called Laser Photo Rejuvenation is used to eliminate pigmented birthmarks. It uses a Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) to breakdown the pigment and this way birthmark is removed. On the other hand for the treatment of vascular birthmarks, laser is used to clog the vessels. Depending on the texture, size and depth of birthmark only one session of laser therapy can give the results but in some cases more sessions are required for complete removal and with every session birthmark fades.

Post-procedural care:

•Apply antibiotic ointment on the treated area as prescribed
•Scab and crust formation is normal. Avoid picking at the scab
•Do not expose treatment site to direct sunlight for at least a couple of months
•Generously apply sunscreen to protect treated area when going out during day time
•Do not apply makeup or any other cosmetic product that may irritate treated area

Among the recent innovative cosmetic surgery practices today are the laser removal of birthmarks, scars and tattoos. If you have an unpleasant or unattractive birthmark, a disfiguring scar or a tattoo that you don’t want anymore, then laser removal is your solution.

In comparison to traditional previous procedures which were invasive and painful, laser removal of unsightly marks is swift, convenient and pain-free. In the past, a tattoo would be removed by dermabrasion (sanding it off) or by surgical excision, with the possible necessity of a skin graft. Tattoo wearers are now thankful for the advent of laser therapy which is more commonly used.

Laser therapy uses highly concentrated laser light vibrations to disintegrate the birthmark or tattoo. The laser design hits only the targeted area for treatment using frequencies that will save the nearby tissue. After the birthmark pigment or tattoo is fragmented by the laser, the disintegrated pieces are removed from the skin by its natural immune system.

This procedure is ideal for areas with good blood circulation. The blood speeds up the removal of the fragments. Hands and feet have less circulation, which make these parts harder to treat.

Laser removal of birthmarks or tattoos should be done by a board certified cosmetic surgeon with sufficient experience. Upon consultation, your skin will be evaluated prior to the operation. The surgeon will decide which area to be treated and the number of treatments to be done plus the rate of success you can expect. The easiest tattoos to be removed are the black ones; colored tattoos need more treatment sessions before being completely removed.

Treatment and recovery

The pulses of laser light would feel like tiny bands of rubber snapping against your skin. Most people would not find this painful, but, the threshold for pain is unique to everyone. Doctors usually let the patients apply anti-inflammatory and anesthetic creams prior to the procedure. If you are the type to feel pain easily, your doctor might prescribe a local anesthetic.

The number of sessions would vary depending on the tattoo or birthmark, from one to ten sessions every four to eight weeks. The succeeding sessions would pierce deeper, resulting in the tattoo or birthmark lightening progressively after each session.

After the procedure, your doctor would bandage your skin and apply anti-bacterial ointment, with instructions to raise the treated area to avoid swelling. You will also be instructed to keep the treated area away from the sun because it is going to be extra receptive to UV rays. A slight sunburn feeling and localized redness are reported by some people after the procedure. Sometimes a scab would develop in the area but this will subside after two weeks. Anti-inflammatories reduce any pain but you must consult with your doctor and not self-medicate.

There are rare instances of any side effects to laser therapy. There could be pigment loss for dark-skinned people and this should be reported to the doctor.
