Post Dental Implant Care

– If you experience any abnormalities after a dental implant procedure, contact our office immediately. The final restoration phase will be started the moment your surgeon gives the green light. It is usually scheduled three to six months after the placement of implants. If you experience difficulty with the temporary prosthesis you have been provided with, please call us immediately

– Fixed Implant Restorations – If your restoration comprises a single crown, or a dental bridge with several teeth that you cannot remove properly, please follow these steps.
Your replacement tooth is affixed to an abutment, which is attached to the implant by a screw. Though these were screwed tightly and carefully, there are still rare instances where these may loosen. If this occurs, please immediately notify us, especially if you feel movement in your replacement teeth. Loose screws may get fractured, or they may become tough, or even impossible, to remove.

– Regular check-ups are crucial so that the dental implants are frequently monitored.

– Routine brushing and flossing should be observed to keep the gum tissue around the implant. In case of gum bleeding or inflammation, rinse your mouth with warm salt water for about three to four times a day. If your condition has not improved in three to four days, call or visit our office as soon as possible.

– Please do not use any toothpick or metal pick to poke around the implants as it could do serious damage to the implant. If you require additional cleaning paraphernalia, we can recommend cleaning devices that are safe to use for dental implants. The crowns attached to your implants require the same care as with normal teeth. For one, avoid chewing ice as it can break the porcelain crowns. Be careful when eating solid and hard food, and avoid opening or tearing items with your teeth.

– Removable Implant Restorations – If you have a removable restoration, this is oral hygiene routine is ideal for you. Your dentures, or partial implant attachments, are embedded into your prosthesis, which should be replaced over time. A sign that you need to replace it is when it starts to loosen. It is highly recommended to remove your dentures at night and thoroughly clean and sanitise them using a denture brush. Food debris and tartar can accumulate around your retainers and prevent them from successfully attaching to your dental implants.

– It is also preferable to use commercial denture cleaners like Efferdent and Stain Away. The receptors attached to your implants (these look like a metal basket or gold bar) also need to be meticulously cleaned habitually. Food and tartar build-up can prevent the attachments from being firmly affixed, or cause the prosthesis to loosen. These need to be regularly brushed to preserve the healthy gums around them. Keep in mind that your implants are susceptible to gum diseases, just like your normal teeth. Ignoring your oral health can result in periodontal disease.

– Regular visits to our clinic are essential so we can closely monitor the screws and the retainers attached to them. If you observe that these start to loosen, immediately let us know. Loose screws may get fracture, making it difficult or impossible to remove.

– Additionally, fixed bridges should be cleaned under the pontic, or missing tooth. Since the artificial teeth are connected to the adjacent, normal teeth, a threader can be used to floss beneath it and remove tartar. These can easily be purchased at most pharmacies. If you do not know how to use it, we would be happy to demonstrate it to you.
