SINGAPORE DELI – A TASTE OF THE REAL ASIA FOR LESSOn one of our recent trips to Karama, we stumbled upon ‘Singapore Deli’. They offer Asian dishes, with specialties from Singapore, Malaysia, and Indonesia all represented. The place is clean, simple, and no-frills. We started by ordering Tahu Isi; chunky pieces of tofu with shredded carrots and cabbage, deep-fried in a crispy batter. The sweet and sour dipping source made the perfect accompaniment.
Our main dishes arrived at the table shortly afterwards. We opted for the classic Indonesian dish Beef Rending, which had been slow-cooked to perfection. The meat was tender and paste was thick and spicy. It came with a generous helping of white rice and green chilies cooked in vinegar, which is a welcome addition for those that like a little extra heat. The Noodle Soup was as simple as expected – egg noodles cooked in a broth, with fresh shrimp, squid, bright green bok choy and crunchy bean sprouts. A diluted red sauce came as a side, which added a slight sharpness to the otherwise light and refreshing dish.
Singapore Deli gives us a taste of the real Asia for less (80 AED for two, drinks included)– and we will definitely be heading back on days when we are craving wholesome comfort food.
