“If The Pavilion Downtown Dubai Café is the future of Dubai dining, then the future is bright. I’m not saying that The Pavilion is set to win multiple Michelin stars and international acclaim; I’m simply expressing a hope that the city’s future restaurants will take note of The Pavilion’s attention to detail – in everything from decor to food to service – and follow suit.
Admittedly, at the outset I was a little sceptical. I assumed the unique, airy interior, with its polished concrete flooring and light wooden tables, was just a place for fashionable people to spend time with their Apple laptops. Yet while this is true, the hipster vibe is supplemented by a great menu. My date and I were disappointed we’d arrived too late to sample the breakfast options (everything from foul medames to eggs Benedict), but contented ourselves with a hummus starter, followed by a spicy grilled chicken wrap and a striploin steak for mains. It turned out we needn’t have ordered the hummus – a basket of piping hot bread soon landed on our table along with a pesto dip and olive and garlic pastes. The bread was excellent, and it was lucky that our mains arrived quickly enough to prevent us from filling up on the stuff.
True to the adjoining gallery, both dishes were works of art. My date’s chicken wrap had been cut into five neat pieces, which stood to attention on a square slate platter, amid artistic swirls and a garnish of sliced jalapeño. My steak was presented with similar panache, the thin striploin adorned with slices of halloumi and fresh tomato, sat on a bed of roasted vegetables. Though the steak was slightly chewy, it compensated by way of flavour and was complemented nicely by the side of crisp, golden fries. My date’s chicken wrap was even better: echelons of flavour were crammed into its tight folds, with playful yet forgiving hints of spice.
I was impressed how many items on the menu were either traditional Arabic dishes (from the foul breakfast to the hot and cold mezze options) or featured an Arabic twist. I’d ordered a date smoothie out of curiosity, a move that was rewarded with a sweet, unique and wholly fresh taste unlike any I’d tried before in a Dubai café. Equally, our dessert combined intricately wrought apple pie (more of a strudel) with saffron-infused ice cream – a delightful conclusion to a meal at one of the most refreshing and interesting venues around town. Highly recommended.”
